Chantal Laurendeau
My art explores themes associated with memory, often using photographic material of my own family, childhood, and personal experiences as a starting point. Memories of past events sometimes come to us like dreams, and they are easily confused, faded, or forgotten. Photographs are the documentation of these events, and I link these fragments together by creating a collection of characters and stories bound in a semi-autobiographical narrative.

I work mainly in hand embroidery, drawing, and painting. The subjects of my drawings and embroidery in particular are treated with meticulous attention to detail, merging with a universal, void space. The landscapes of my childhood are frequent settings, and sometimes become the subject as well, with their own unique traits and personalities.
